OVERVIEW

Portable skills is a carefully set of unit standards that provide the key technical knowledge of the area chosen.  It focuses on aspects of the training that can be used to generate revenue from task completed. The Key focus of a portable skills program is to produce a sound practical expertise on particular components of a trade with an aim to use the skill to sustain an SMME business.  Portable skills are tailor made to suit the audience providing a flexibility that is obtainable by structural training. Portable skills do not have language barriers as learning is pre-documentarily through demonstration application.

BUILDING SKILLS – BRICKLAYING

COURSE DESCRIPTION         

The purpose of this skills program is to provide learners with the standards required to satisfy the challenges of participating actively in the building construction industry

DURATION    

3 Months

ATTENDEES MIN – MAX        

Minimum of 5 – Maximum of 10

PRE- REQUISITES    

Learners should have acquired the competencies of NQF level 2 in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, especially numeracy and literacy competencies. Prior to embarking on learning towards this skills programme

TARGET LEARNERS    

The range of the typical learners includes persons involved in the placing and cementing of manufactured brick / block size units to construct a range of structures and elements.

FORM OF ASSESSMENT     

Portfolio of evidence

Formative Assessment: Evidence of performance will be collected continuously as Learners progress and will be considered in the final determination of learners capabilities

COURSE OUTCOMES   

Apply health and safety to a work area

Set out and prepare construction masonry work area

Set out, excavate, cast concrete, strip foundations and build foundation walling

Build masonry superstructure using solid units

BUILDING SKILLS – TILING

COURSE DESCRIPTION                  

Qualifying learners are able to prepare surfaces, apply tiles to walls and floors, and repair- existing tiling without supervision.

DURATION                         

3 Months

Minimum of 5 – Maximum of 10

PRE- REQUISITES                             

Learners should have acquired the competencies of NQF level 2 in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, especially numeracy and literacy competencies. Prior to embarking on learning towards this skills programme

TARGET LEARNERS                         

The range of the typical leaners includes persons involved in the application of tiles to walls, columns, steps, piers and around a bath

FORM OF ASSESSMENT

COURSE OUTCOMES

Establish and prepare a work area

Plan and prepare to tile

BASIC PLUMBING

COURSE DESCRIPTION
Qualifying learners will have knowledge of different plumbing materials and systems, knowledge of maintenance elements connected with plumbing, knowledge and application of plumbing tools and equipment, knowledge of measurements of quantities and procurement of materials, knowledge of building regulations, water laws and applicable plumbing specifications.

PRE- REQUISITES
Learners should have acquired the competencies of NQF level 2 in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band, especially numeracy and literacy competencies. Prior to embarking on learning towards this skills programme

The range of the typical leaners includes persons involved in applying and understanding the functions of plumbing systems to install, test and maintain them in a built environment
